He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the palm grove, and with him was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, and there was his son breathing his last. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed him in his lap, and his eyes overflowed. He said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: "Do you weep, O Messenger of Allah, while you forbid weeping?" He said: "I did not forbid weeping; I only forbade two foolish, wicked sounds: a sound at times of amusement, play and the flutes of Satan, and a sound at a calamity, the scratching of faces, the tearing of garments, and the wailing of Satan. And this is mercy from me; whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy. O Ibrāhīm, were it not that it is a matter of truth, and a promise that is true, and that it is a path that will be travelled, and that our last will join our first, I would grieve for you with a grief greater than this. And we are indeed grieved for you, O Ibrāhīm. The eye weeps and the heart grieves, and we do not say what angers the Lord."
