He said: ʿAbdullāh b. Aḥmad b. Saʿd al-Bazzār, the ḥāfiẓ, said: Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Būshanjī narrated to us, he said: al-Nufaylī narrated to us, he said: ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAmr narrated to us, from ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAqīl, from Ḥamzah b. Ṣuhayb, from his father, who said: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said to me: "O man, were it not for three things in you: you are from the Romans, yet you attribute yourself to the Arabs; you take the kunyah Abū Yaḥyā though you have no child; and there is extravagance in you with food." So I said: As for my taking the kunyah Abū Yaḥyā though I have no child, it is a kunyah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me. As for your saying that I am a man from the Romans, the Romans took me captive from al-Mawṣil after I had known my lineage and my family, and I am a man of al-Namir b. Qāsiṭ. As for your saying that there is extravagance in me with food, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "The best of you is the one who feeds food."
