machine translationAbū Saʿīd b. Abī ʿAmr informed us, he said: Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Aṣamm narrated to us, he said: Muḥammad b. al-Jahm narrated to us, he said: al-Farrāʾ narrated to us, he said: Ḥabbān narrated to me, from al-Kalbī, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās,

He said: {until you seek permission} [al-Nūr: 27] and ask leave. And he said: "This is a transposition of order (muqaddam and muʾakhkhar)." It is only: until you greet and ask leave. You say: "Peace be upon you, may I enter?" Al-Farrāʾ said: In the speech of the Arabs, istiʾnās is as in: "Go and look around (istaʾnis), do you see anyone?" So its meaning is: see who is in the house. I said: His statement "this is a transposition of order" means this in terms of meaning, and what al-Farrāʾ mentioned bears witness to the correctness of what al-Ḥalīmī said about the meaning of the verse.
