Yaḥyā narrated to us, ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Ramlī narrated to us, ʿAbdullāh b. Kulayb al-Murādī narrated to us, Mūsā b. ʿAlī b. Rabāḥ narrated to us: An old man, a neighbour of mine in Ifrīqiyah, from the people of Medina, narrated to me, he said: I heard Ḥassān b. Thābit in the middle of the night proclaiming his names, and he was saying:

He was saying: "I am Ḥassān b. Thābit, I am the son of al-Furayʿah, I am al-Ḥusām (the sword)." When morning came I went to him early and said to him: "Last night I heard you proclaiming your names. What was it that pleased you?" He said: "I worked on a line of poetry and perfected it, so I proclaimed my names." I said: "What is the line?" He said: I said: [Meter: al-Ṭawīl] And indeed a man who spends his evening and morning safe from people, except for what he himself has committed, is truly fortunate. Abū Isḥāq said: Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Abī Saʿīd al-Khālidī added to me regarding it: When Ḥassān b. Thābit died, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥassān, after his father's death, kindled a fire until the clan gathered around him. Then ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥassān said to us: "I have composed a line and I feared it might be lost through some mishap befalling me, so I gathered you to hear it." So he recited to them: [Meter: al-Ṭawīl] And indeed a man who attains wealth and then gains neither a friend nor one in need is truly indifferent. When ʿAbd al-Raḥmān died, Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān did the same and recited to them: [Meter: al-Ṭawīl] And indeed a man who quarrels with people over wealth and does not ask God for wealth is truly envious.
