He said: When ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him) came to Syria, he came upon a ford. He dismounted from his camel, took off his leather socks and held them in his hand, and waded into the water with his camel. Abū ʿUbaydah said to him: "Today you have done something that is considered great by the people of the land; you did such and such." He said: So he struck him on the chest and said: "Oh! If only someone other than you had said it, Abū ʿUbaydah! You were the most humiliated of people, the most despised of people, and the fewest of people, and God gave you honor through Islam. So whenever you seek honor through anything other than it, God will humiliate you."
