She said: One night Yaḥyā stood for his regular night prayer (wird). When he had finished it, he sat reading from the Muṣḥaf. Then she mentioned his story about the entry of the emir ʿAbdullāh b. Ṭāhir upon him. She said: When he came near him and greeted him, he stood up to him with the Muṣḥaf in his hand, then returned to his reading until he finished the sūrah he had begun. Then he put down the Muṣḥaf and apologized to the emir, and said: "I was not occupied with it out of neglect of your right; I had only begun a sūrah and so I finished it." ʿAbdullāh sat for a while talking with him, then said to him: "Submit your needs to us." He said: "Can one do without the ruler, may God support him? I have a need right now; if he fulfils it, I will submit it." He said: "We will fulfil it, whatever it is." Then Abū Zakariyyā said: "I used to hear of the beauty of the emir's face, and I had not seen it until this very hour. My need from him is that he not commit what would burn this beauty in the Fire." So the emir ʿAbdullāh b. Ṭāhir began to weep until he got up weeping.
