قَالَ: وَسَمِعْتُ ذَا النُّونِ،
يَقُولُ: " اعْلَمُوا أَنَّهُ لَا يَصْفُو لِعَامِلٍ عَمَلٌ إِلَّا بِإِخْرَاجِ الْخَلْقِ مِنَ الْقَلْبِ فِي عَمَلِهِ وَهُوَ الْإِخْلَاصُ، فَمَنْ أَخْلَصَ لِلَّهِ لَمْ يَرْجُ غَيْرَ اللهِ، فَكُنْ وَكُنْ عَلَى عِلْمِ أَنَّهُ لَا قَبُولَ لِعَمَلٍ يُرَادُ بِهِ غَيْرُ اللهِ، فَمَنْ أَرَادَ طَرِيقَ التَّجْرِيدِ إِلَى الْإِخْلَاصِ فَلَا يَدْخُلَنَّ فِي إِرَادَتِهِ أَحَدٌ سِوَى اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، فَشَمِّرْ عَنْ سَاقِكَ وَاحْذَرْ حَذَرَ الرَّجُلِ أَنْ يُدْخِلَ فِي الْعَظَمَةِ لِلَّهِ تَعْظِيمَ غَيْرِ اللهِ، وَاجْعَلِ الْغَالِبَ عَلَى قَلْبِكَ ذَلِكَ وَقَدْ صَفَا قَلْبُكَ بِالْإِخْلَاصِ "

He would say: "Know that no deed of any doer is pure except by removing creation from the heart in his deed, and that is sincerity (ikhlāṣ). Whoever is sincere to God hopes for nothing besides God. So be, and be, aware that no deed is accepted that is intended for other than God. Whoever wants the path of stripping away [everything else] toward sincerity, let no one besides God, Mighty and Majestic, enter into his intention. So gird yourself and beware, as a man is wary, of admitting into the majesty due to God the veneration of anyone other than God, and make this the dominant thing in your heart, for your heart has become pure through sincerity."
