He said: I asked ʿAbdullāh b. Nāfiʿ about chess and backgammon. He said: "I did not meet any of our scholars except that he disliked them." Thus Mālik used to say. Shurayḥ said: And I asked him about their testimony, and he said: Their testimony is not accepted, and there is no honor for them, unless he hides that and does not make it public. Thus Mālik used to say; and likewise was his statement about singing, and no testimony is accepted from them. The Shaykh said: "As for what there is no disagreement about its prohibition, which is backgammon, we reject the testimony of whoever plays it. And as for what they disagreed about its prohibition, which is chess, we do not reject the testimony of whoever plays it considering it lawful, if he does not gamble on it and is not heedless of the prayer by playing it excessively. As for disliking playing it, al-Shāfiʿī has stated it explicitly, and with Allah is success."
