Chain of narrators

machine translationAbū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us: Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Duḥaym al-Shaybānī informed us, in Kufa: Ibrāhīm b. Isḥāq al-Qāḍī narrated to us: Yaʿlā b. ʿUbayd and Jaʿfar b. ʿAwn narrated to us, from Bassām al-Ṣayrafī, from Abū Jaʿfar.

Machine translation, not reviewed

He said: Two men entered upon ʿAlī (may God be pleased with him), and he laid down a cushion for them. One of them sat on the cushion and the other sat on the ground. ʿAlī said to the one who sat on the ground: "Get up and sit on the cushion, for none refuses an honour except a donkey." The Shaykh said: "This is disconnected (munqaṭiʿ). And if it is authentic, then it is to be understood that he did not sit on it out of aversion to accepting the honour shown to him, or out of aversion to sitting with his companion, so ʿAlī noticed this and rebuked him for it. As for the Prophet ﷺ, he was closer to the believers than they are to themselves, so he had the right to sit wherever he wished. And God knows best."
