She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do not cut the meat with a knife, for that is the practice of the non-Arabs; rather, tear it with your teeth, for that is more wholesome and more palatable." "Abū Maʿshar al-Madanī was alone in transmitting it, and he is not strong." And we have narrated from ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī that he saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cutting from the shoulder of a sheep in his hand, then he was called to the prayer, so he threw it down along with the knife with which he had been cutting, then stood and prayed, and did not perform ablution. "So it is possible, if the hadith of Abū Maʿshar is authentic, that this refers to meat that was not fully cooked, while the hadith of Abū Maʿshar refers to meat that was fully cooked, and that this is better, as" we have narrated from ʿUthmān b. Abī Sulaymān, who said: Ṣafwān b. Umayyah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me tearing meat off the bone with my hand, and he said to me: "O Ṣafwān!" I said: At your service. He said: "Bring the meat close to your mouth, for it is more wholesome and more palatable."
