machine translationMuslim narrated it in al-Ṣaḥīḥ, from Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal. The Shaykh said: "In Kitāb al-Sunan we have mentioned the Prophet's ﷺ prohibition of the meat of domestic donkeys, and what has been narrated from him about the prohibition of the jallālah, and what the people of knowledge said about it, that what is meant is when the smell of filth appears in its meat. We also mentioned the reports of his prohibition of killing the ant, the bee, the shrike, the hoopoe, and the frog, and what was narrated from him about the swallow. We narrated his permission to kill the crow, the kite, the mouse, the scorpion, the dog, and in another narration the aggressive predator. None of these is lawful to eat. We also narrated the report of his permitting the hyena, and the fox is in the same category as the hyena. We narrated the report permitting the hare, the wild donkey, the chicken, the bustard, and the dabb (spiny-tailed lizard). Whatever the Arabs ate when not in a state of necessity is lawful, as long as no explicit text of a report prohibiting it has come. We narrated the reports permitting horse meat without disapproval; repeating them in this book would be lengthy, so whoever wants them may refer to Kitāb al-Sunan, God willing. As for His saying, Mighty and Majestic is He: {حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَيْتَةُ وَالدَّمُ} [al-Māʾidah: 3], we have mentioned the explanation of the verse, from ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭalḥah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, in the Book of Hunting in Kitāb al-Sunan."
