He said: I asked ʿAbdullāh about the forbidden gain (suḥt): is it in judgement? He said: "{وَمَنْ لَمْ يَحْكُمْ بِمَا أَنْزَلَ اللهُ فَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْكَافِرُونَ} [al-Māʾidah: 44]" and he recited all the verses. "But the forbidden gain is that a man seeks the help of another man against the wrongdoing of a ruler, and then gives him a gift." He said: A man sought the help of Masrūq against a wrong that one of the governors of Ibn Ziyād or Ziyād had done to him, so he helped him until he got it back for him. The man gave him a slave girl as a gift, but he returned her and said: "No need of yours shall ever be sought from me again." Ibn Masʿūd informed me that that is the forbidden gain.
