أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ الْعُصْمِيُّ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بَكْرِ بْنَ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ أَبِي
يَقُولُ: وَقَامَ فِي مَجْلِسِهِ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَغْدَادَ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا عُثْمَانَ مَتَى يَكُونُ الرَّجُلُ صَادِقًا فِي حُبِّ مَوْلَاهُ؟ قَالَ: " إِذَا خَلَا مِنْ خِلَافِهِ كَانَ صَادِقًا فِي حُبِّهِ ". قَالَ: فَوَضَعَ الرَّجُلُ التُّرَابَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ وَصَاحَ، وَقَالَ: كَيْفَ ادَّعَى حُبَّهُ، وَلَمْ أَخْلُ طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ مِنْ خِلَافِهِ؟ قَالَ: فَبَكَى أَبُو عُثْمَانَ وَأَهْلُ الْمَجْلِسِ قَالَ: فَجَعَلَ يَبْكِي أَبُو عُثْمَانَ وَيَقُولُ فِي بُكَائِهِ: " صَادِقٌ فِي حُبِّهِ مُقَصِّرٌ فِي حَقِّهِ " قَالَ الْبَيْهَقِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ: " وَهَذَا الَّذِي قَالَهُ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ مِنْ صِدْقِ حُبِّهِ، وَإِنْ كَانَ مُقَصِّرًا فِي حَيَاتِهِ يَشْهَدُ لَهُ "

He said: A man from the people of Baghdad stood up in his gathering and said: "O Abū ʿUthmān, when is a man truthful in his love for his Lord?" He said: "When he is free from opposing Him, he is truthful in his love." He said: The man put dust on his head and cried out, and said: "How can I claim love for Him, when I have not been free from opposing Him for the blink of an eye?" He said: Abū ʿUthmān wept, and the people of the gathering wept. He said: Abū ʿUthmān kept weeping and saying in his weeping: "Truthful in his love, falling short in His right." Al-Bayhaqī, may God have mercy on him, said: "And this which Abū ʿUthmān said about the truthfulness of his love, even though he was falling short, his life bears witness to it."
