أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظٌ، أنا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى، نا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ الْأَزْهَرِ بْنِ الْحَارِثٍ، نا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الذُّهْلِيٌّ، نا يَعْلَى بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الطَّنَافِسِيُّ،
قَالَ: دَخَلْنَا عَلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُوقَةَ، فَقَالَ: يَا ابْنَ أَخِي، أُحَدِّثُكُمْ بِحَدِيثٍ لَعَلَّهُ يَنْفَعُكُمْ فَقَدْ نَفَعَنِي، قَالَ لَنَا عَطَاءُ بْنُ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ: " إِنَّ مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ كَانُوا يَعُدُّونَ فُضُولَ الْكَلَامِ مَا عَدَا كِتَابَ اللهِ، أَوْ أَمْرًا بِمَعْرُوفٍ، أَوْ نَهْيًا عَنْ مُنْكَرٍ، أَوْ أَنْ تَنْطِقَ فِي مَعِيشَتِكَ الَّتِي لَا بُدَّ لَكَ مِنْهَا، أَتَذْكُرُونَ أَنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ حَافِظِينَ كِرَامًا كَاتِبِينَ، عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ قَعِيدٌ مَا يَلْفِظُ مِنْ قَوْلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيْهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدٌ أَمَا يَسْتَحْيِي أَحَدُكُمْ لَوْ نُشِرَتْ صَحِيفَتُهُ الَّتِي أَمْلَى صَدْرَ نَهَارِهِ وَلَيْسَ فِيهَا شَيْءٌ مِنْ أَمْرِ آخِرَتِهِ "

Abī Rabāḥ said to us: 'Indeed those before you used to count as superfluous speech everything other than the Book of God, or enjoining what is right, or forbidding what is wrong, or that you speak about your livelihood which you cannot do without. Do you remember that over you are noble guardians, recorders, on the right and on the left sitting? {مَا يَلْفِظُ مِنْ قَوْلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيْهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدٌ} Does not one of you feel ashamed if his record were unrolled, which he dictated at the start of his day, and there is nothing in it of the affairs of his Hereafter?'"
