He said: Ibn Masʿūd said: "Everything that is coming is near. Indeed, the far is only that which is not coming. Indeed, Allah does not hasten for the haste of anyone, and do not [unclear] the affair of the people, for what is by Allah's will, not what the people will. Allah wills one thing and the people will another thing; what Allah wills comes to be even if the people dislike it. There is none to bring near what Allah has put far, and none to put far what Allah has brought near, and nothing happens except by Allah's permission. The truest speech is the Book of Allah, the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad ﷺ, the worst of matters are the newly invented ones, every newly invented matter is an innovation (bidʿah), and every innovation is misguidance." Maʿmar said: And someone other than Jaʿfar said, from Ibn Masʿūd: The best thing cast into the heart is certainty, the best wealth is the wealth of the soul, the best knowledge is that which benefits, and the best guidance is that which is followed. What is little and suffices is better than what is much and distracts. Each of you will end up in a place of four cubits, so do not weary the people and do not make them bored, for every soul has times of energy and eagerness, and it has times of boredom and turning away. Indeed, the worst of dreams is a false dream. Lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. Indeed, hold to truthfulness, for truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. Take a lesson in that: they are the two youths who met; it is said of the truthful one, 'He spoke truly and was righteous,' and it is said of the wicked one, 'He lied and was wicked.' And we heard your Prophet ﷺ say: "A servant keeps on speaking the truth until he is recorded as truthful (ṣiddīq), and he keeps on lying until he is recorded as a great liar. Indeed, lying is not fitting either in earnest or in jest, nor that one of you promise his child and then not fulfil it for him. Indeed, do not ask the People of the Book about anything, for a long time has passed over them and their hearts have hardened, and they have invented innovations in their religion. If you must ask them, then what agrees with your Book, take it, and what contradicts it—" and ʿAbdullāh mentioned a word, meaning: hold back from it and be silent—"Indeed, the smallest of houses is the house in which there is nothing of the Book of Allah. Indeed, the house in which there is nothing of the Book of Allah is ruined, like the ruin of a house that has no one living in it. Indeed, Satan leaves the house in which he hears Sūrat al-Baqarah being recited."
