أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ الحرفي، أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلْمَانَ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي الدُّنْيَا، حَدَّثَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ الْعِجْلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ السَّمَّاكِ،
قَالَ: كُتِبَتْ إِلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ حِينَ وَلِيَ الْقَضَاءَ بِالرَّقَّةِ: " أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَلْتَكُنِ التَّقْوَى مِنْ بَالِكَ عَلَى كل حَالٍ، وَخَفِ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي كُلِّ نِعْمَةٍ عَلَيْكَ لِقِلَّةِ الشُّكْرِ عَلَيْهَا مَعَ الْمَعْصِيَةِ بِهَا، فَإِنَّ فِي النِّعْمَةِ حُجَّةً، وَفِيهَا تَبِعَةٌ. فَأَمَّا الْحُجَّةُ فِيهَا فَالْمَعْصِيَةُ بِهَا، وَأَمَّا التَّبِعَةُ فِيهَا فَقِلَّةُ الشُّكْرِ عَلَيْهَا، فَعَفَا اللهُ عَنْكَ كُلَّمَا ضَيَّعْتَ مِنْ شُكْرٍ، أَوْ رَكِبْتَ مِنْ ذَنْبٍ، أَوْ قَصَّرْتَ مِنْ حَقٍّ "

For in a blessing there is a proof against one, and in it there is a consequence. As for the proof in it, it is disobedience with it; and as for the consequence in it, it is the lack of gratitude for it. May God pardon you for every gratitude you have neglected, every sin you have committed, or every right you have fallen short in."
