ʿĀʾishah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood in prayer during the night and prolonged the prostration until I thought that he had been taken. When I saw that, I got up and moved his big toe, and it moved, so I went back. When he raised his head from the prostration and finished his prayer, he said: "O ʿĀʾishah" or "O Ḥumayrāʾ, did you think that the Prophet had betrayed you?" I said: No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, but I thought that you had been taken because of the length of your prostration. He said: "Do you know what night this is?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: "This is the night of the middle of Shaʿbān. Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, looks upon His servants on the night of the middle of Shaʿbān, so He forgives those who seek forgiveness, has mercy on those who seek mercy, and leaves the people of spite as they are." Al-Azharī said: "His saying 'khāsa bik' is said of a man when he betrays his companion and does not give him his due: 'he has khāsa with him'." I said: This is a good mursal report, and it is possible that al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥārith took it from Makḥūl, and Allah knows best. Reports that are objectionable (munkar) have been narrated on this subject, whose narrators are unknown people; we have mentioned two of them in the Book of Supplications.
