أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ بِالْكُوفَةِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ الْعَطَّارُ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، حَدَّثَنِي سَيْفُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعْدُ بْنُ طَرِيفٍ الْإسْكَافُ، عَنِ الْأَصْبَغِ بْنِ نُبَاتَةَ،
قَالَ: قَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ: " أَنَا وَاللهِ، حَرَّضْتُ عُمَرَ عَلَى قِيَامِ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ " فَقِيلَ: وَاللهِ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَكَيْفَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ: " أَخْبَرْتُهُ أَنَّ فِي السَّمَاءِ السَّابِعَةِ حَظِيرَةً، يُقَالُ: لَهَا حَظِيرَةُ الْقُدُسِ، فِيهَا مَلَائِكَةٌ يُقَالُ لَهُمُ: الرَّوحَانِيُّونَ، فَإِذَا كَانَ لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ اسْتَأْذَنُوا الرَّبَّ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ الْنُزُولَ إِلَى الدُّنْيَا، فَيَأْذَنُ لَهُمْ فَلَا يَمُرُّونَ بِمَسْجِدٍ يُصَلَّى فِيهِ، وَلَا يَسْتَقْبِلُونَ أَحَدًا فِي طَرِيقٍ إِلَّا دَعَوْا لَهُ فَأَصَابَهُ مِنْهُمْ " قَالَ عُمَرُ: أَفَلَا نُعَرِّفُ النَّاسَ بِالْخَيْرِ فَأَمَرَهُمْ بِالْقِيَامِ قَالَ الْإِمَامُ أَحْمَدُ: " هَذَا حَدِيثٌ فِيهِ عُبَيْدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْعَطَّارُ، عَنْ سَيْفِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، وَهُوَ إِنْ صَحَّ مَعَ مَا قَبْلَهُ مِنْ الحَدِيثِ الْمُسْنَدِ فَفِيهِمَا إِخْبَارٌ عَنْ نُزُولِ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَتَسْلِيمِهِمْ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ، وَدُعائِهِمْ لَهُمْ وَفِي كِتَابِ اللهِ تَعَالَى بَيَانُ نُزُولِهِمْ وَتَسْلِيمِهِمْ، جَعَلَنَا اللهُ مِمَّنْ يُصِيبُهُ بَرَكَاتُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ، وَدَعَوَاتِ هَؤُلَاءِ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَتَسْلِيمِهِمْ بِفَضْلِهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ "

He said: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib said: "By God, I am the one who urged ʿUmar to the standing in prayer (qiyām) during the month of Ramaḍān." It was said: "By God, O Commander of the Believers, how was that?" He said: "I informed him that in the seventh heaven there is an enclosure called the Enclosure of Holiness (ḥaẓīrat al-quds), in which there are angels called the Rūḥānīyūn. When it is the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr), they ask their Lord, Mighty and Majestic, for permission to descend to the world, and He permits them. They do not pass by a mosque in which prayer is being performed, and they do not meet anyone on a road, without supplicating for him, and some of that reaches him from them." ʿUmar said: "Shall we not make the people aware of this good?" So he commanded them to perform the standing in prayer. Imam Aḥmad said: "This is a hadith in which there is ʿUbayd b. Isḥāq al-ʿAṭṭār, from Sayf b. ʿUmar. If it is sound, together with the preceding hadith of the Musnad, then both contain a report of the angels descending and greeting the Muslims on the Night of Power and supplicating for them. In the Book of God, the Exalted, there is a clear statement of their descent and their greeting. May God make us among those whom the blessings of this night, and the supplications of these angels and their greeting, reach, by His grace and mercy."
