Suwayd b. ʿĀmir b. Yazīd b. Jāriyah al-Anṣārī, one of Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, imam of the mosque of Qubāʾ, narrated to us: He said: Muḥammad b. Mūsā b. al-Ḥārith narrated to me, from his father, from Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh al-Sulamī,

He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to the settlement of Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf on a Wednesday, and he saw a large bowl-like plot of wealth that he had not seen before. He said to them: "O company of the Ansār." They said: "At your service, O Messenger of Allah, may our fathers and mothers be your ransom." He said: "If only, when you go down for your festival – meaning Friday – you would stay until you hear some of my words." They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, may our fathers and mothers be your ransom." He said: So when Friday came they attended, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed and finished, and prayed two rakʿahs. Before that, when he prayed the Friday prayer he would return to his house and pray those two in his house, wherever he was at that time, but now he prayed them voluntarily in the mosque. When he finished, he turned to face them. He said: The Ansār turned back to the mosque until they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: "O company of the Ansār." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, may our fathers and mothers be your ransom." He said: "You were in the Jāhiliyyah, when you did not worship Allah, bearing the burdens of others out of your wealth, doing good, and maintaining family ties. Then when Allah favored you with Islam and brought Muhammad to you, you began to wall in your wealth. In what the son of Adam eats there is a reward, and in what the birds eat there is a reward." He said: So he left, and there remained no one except that he tore down thirty gates in his property.
