A man from Banū Kinānah, then from Banū Mukhdaj, met a man of the Anṣār called Abū Muḥammad and asked him about the Witr prayer. He said to him: "It is obligatory." The Kinānī said: So I met ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit and mentioned that to him, and he said: "Abū Muḥammad has lied. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Five prayers Allah has made obligatory upon the servants. Whoever performs them, not neglecting anything of them, will have a covenant with Allah that He will admit him to Paradise. And whoever does not perform them will have no covenant with Allah; if He wills He will punish him, and if He wills He will have mercy on him.'" And in the narration of Yazīd: that al-Mukhdajī, a man from Banū Kinānah, narrated to him that Abū Muḥammad, a man of the Anṣār who used to live in al-Shām, said: Witr is obligatory, and that al-Mukhdajī went to ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit and informed him of that, and ʿUbādah said: then he mentioned the hadith with the same meaning.
