Abū ʿUbayd said: "In my view, its meaning is that one begins from the end of the Qurʾān, from the two Muʿawwidhatayn, then ascends to al-Baqarah, like what children learn in the kuttāb, because the Sunnah is contrary to this. The concession came only for teaching the child and the non-Arab with the Mufaṣṣal, because of the difficulty of the long sūrahs for them." Abū ʿUbayd said: "It has been narrated from al-Ḥasan and Ibn Sīrīn that they disliked even less than this." Abū ʿUbayd said: Ibn Abī ʿAdī narrated to me, from Ashʿath, from al-Ḥasan and Ibn Sīrīn: "That they both used to recite the Qurʾān from its beginning to its end, and they disliked the awrād (portions)." He said: And Ibn Sīrīn said: "God's arrangement is better than your arrangement." Abū ʿUbayd said: "The interpretation of the awrād is that they introduced the practice of dividing the Qurʾān into parts, each part containing different sūrahs of the Qurʾān, not in the original order. Rather, they would put a long sūrah with another shorter than it in length, then add more, and so on until they completed the part. These are the awrād that al-Ḥasan and Ibn Sīrīn disliked, and reciting in reverse order (al-naks) is worse than this and more severe."
