أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ، أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ بْنِ مُوسَى، حدثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَجَاءٍ، حدثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ
قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " أَشْرَفَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ عَلَى الدُّنْيَا، فَرَأَتْ بَنِي آدَمَ يَعْصُونَ، فَقَالُوا: يَا رَبُّ مَا أَجْهَلَ هَؤُلَاءِ مَا أَقَلَّ مَعْرِفَةَ هَؤُلَاءِ بِعَظَمَتِكَ، فَقَالَ: لَوْ كُنْتُمْ فِي مِسْلَاخِهِمْ لَعَصَيْتُمُونِي. قَالُوا: كَيْفَ يَكُونُ هَذَا وَنَحْنُ نُسَبِّحُ بِحَمْدِكَ، وَنُقَدِّسُ لَكَ؟ قَالَ: فَاخْتَارُوا مِنْكُمْ مَلَكَيْنِ، قَالُوا: فَاخْتَارُوا هَارُوتَ، وَمَارُوتَ، ثُمَّ أُهْبِطَا إِلَى الدُّنْيَا، وَرُكِّبَتْ فِيهِمَا شَهَوَاتُ بَنِي آدَمَ، وَمُثِّلَتْ لَهُمَا امْرَأَةٌ فَمَا عُصِمَا حَتَّى وَاقَعَا الْمَعْصِيَةَ فَقَالَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَهُمَا: فَاخْتَارَا عَذَابَ الدُّنْيَا، أَوْ عَذَابَ الْآخِرَةِ، فَنَظَرَ أَحَدُهُمَا إِلَى صَاحِبِهِ، فَقَالَ: مَا تَقُولُ؟ قَالَ: أَقُولُ إِنَّ عَذَابَ الدُّنْيَا مُنْقَطِعُ، وَإِنَّ عَذَابَ الْآخِرَةِ لَا يَنْقَطِعُ، فَاخْتَارَا عَذَابَ الدُّنْيَا فَهُمَا اللَّذَانِ ذَكَرَهُمَا اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي كِتَابِهِ: {وَمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَى الْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوتَ وَمَارُوتَ} [البقرة: 102] " الْآيَةَ وَرُوِّينَاهُ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ مَوْقُوفًا عَلَيْهِ، وَهُوَ أَصَحُّ " فَإِنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ إِنَّمَا أَخَذَهُ، عَنْ كَعْبٍ "

He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The angels looked down upon the world and saw the children of Adam disobeying. They said: O Lord, how ignorant these are, how little do these know of Your greatness! He said: Had you been in their skins, you would have disobeyed Me. They said: How could this be, when we glorify Your praise and sanctify You? He said: Then choose two angels from among you. They said: So they chose Hārūt and Mārūt. Then they were sent down to the world, and the desires of the children of Adam were placed in them, and a woman was presented to them. They were not protected until they committed the sin. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to them: Choose the punishment of the world or the punishment of the Hereafter. One of them looked at his companion and said: What do you say? He said: I say that the punishment of the world comes to an end, while the punishment of the Hereafter does not end. So they chose the punishment of the world. They are the two whom Allah, Mighty and Majestic, mentioned in His Book: {وَمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَى الْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوتَ وَمَارُوتَ} [al-Baqarah: 102]" - the verse. And we have narrated it by another route, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿUmar, as a statement stopping at him (mawqūf), and that is more authentic. "For Ibn ʿUmar only took it from Kaʿb."
