From the Prophet ﷺ: that when this verse was revealed: {إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًا مُبِينًا لِيَغْفِرَ لَكَ اللهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِكَ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ} [al-Fatḥ: 2], he stood and prayed until his feet swelled, and he worshipped until he became like a worn-out waterskin. They said: "O Messenger of God, you do this, when what came before of your sin and what is to come has been forgiven for you?" He said: "Should I not be a thankful servant?" And in the narration of Abū ʿAbdillāh: "Then should I not be a thankful servant?"
