"The Prophet of God ﷺ never had a morning meal or an evening meal of bread and meat together, except with a ḍafaf," meaning a group of people. Al-Bayhaqī, may God have mercy on him, said: "This is how I found the explanation in the hadith; I do not know who said it." Abū ʿUbayd said: "He would say: 'He did not eat alone, but with the people.'" Aḥmad b. Yaḥyā said: "The ḍafaf is when the eaters outnumber the amount of food, and the ḥafaf is when the food matches their number." It was also said: "The ḍafaf is narrowness and hardship; he means that he did not have that together except in narrowness and hardship."
