machine translationAl-Bukhārī narrated it in al-Ṣaḥīḥ, from ʿAlī b. ʿAbdullāh, from Sufyān. As for al-Ḥāshir (the Gatherer), its explanation is in the hadith: it means the first to be raised from the grave, and everyone else is raised after him; and he is the first to be taken to the place of gathering, then the people follow after him in his footsteps. As for al-Māḥī (the Eraser), its explanation has also already appeared in the hadith. It is known that Allah the Exalted is the Gatherer and the Eraser; the Prophet ﷺ was named by them only because Allah the Exalted made his gathering a cause for the gathering of others, and his prophethood a cause for the vanishing of all falsehood, of disbelief and other things, so that in terms of attribution he became as though he were the Gatherer and the Eraser. As for al-Muqaffī, it means the one who is followed. It may be that what is meant is that he follows after Ibrāhīm, peace be upon him, because of His saying: {أَنِ اتَّبِعْ مِلَّةَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفًا}. It may also be that he follows after Mūsā, ʿĪsā and other prophets of the Children of Israel, peace be upon them, because their peoples were transferred from following them to following him, or from Judaism and Christianity to the tolerant primordial faith (ḥanīfiyyah). As for al-ʿĀqib and al-Khātam, their explanation has already appeared in the hadith. As for the Prophet of Mercy, it has come from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: "I am only a gifted mercy."
