He said: Sufyān said: Abū Ḥāzim said: "I found the world to be two things: a thing that is for me, and a thing that is for someone other than me. As for what is for me, were I to seek it before its appointed time by the stratagem of the heavens and the earth, I would not be able to attain it. And as for what is for someone other than me, I did not get it in the past, so why should I hope for it in what remains? My provision is withheld from others, just as the provision of others is withheld from me. So in which of these two shall I spend my life?" Sufyān said: Abū Ḥāzim was asked: "What is your wealth?" He said: "The best of my wealth is my trust in Allah, the Exalted, and my despair of what is in the hands of people." He said: One of the rulers said to Abū Ḥāzim: "Present your need to me." He said: "Far be it, far be it! It has been presented to the One before whom needs are not held back. Whatever of it He gives me, I am content with, and whatever of it He withholds from me, I am satisfied."
