He said: I said to Ḥassān b. Abī Sinān: Does your soul not speak to you of poverty? He said: "Yes, it does." So I say to it: "O soul, if that happens, I will take up the spade and sit with the laborers, and I will earn a dāniq or two dāniqs, and you will live on it and be at ease." Ibn Shawdhab said: Ḥassān b. Abī Sinān was a man from the merchants of Basra. He had a partner in Basra while he himself stayed in al-Ahwāz, and he would send goods to his partner in Basra. Then they would meet at the end of every year and settle accounts, and then divide the profit. He would take his sustenance from his profit and give the rest in charity, while his partner would build houses and acquire land. He said: Ḥassān once came to Basra and distributed what he wished to distribute. Then a household was mentioned to him whose need had not been apparent, and he said: "Were you not going to inform us?" He said: "So he borrowed three hundred dirhams for them and sent it to them."
