أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، سَمِعْتُ أَبَا أَحْمَدَ حَامِدَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ الْكَاغِدِيَّ الصُّوفِيَّ، يَقُولُ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ، نَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ابْنُ أَخِي الْأَصْمَعِيِّ، حَدَّثَنِي الْأَصْمَعِيُّ،
قَالَ:" دَخَلْتُ الْبَادِيَةَ، فَإِذَا أَنَا بِعَجُوزٍ وَبَيْنَ يَدَيْهَا شَاةٌ مَقْتُولَةٌ وَجِرْوُ ذِئْبٍ مُقَفًّى فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهَا فَقَالَتْ: أَوَ يُعْجِبُكَ هَذَا؟ قُلْتُ: بَلَى. وَمَا قِصَّتُكِ؟ قَالَتِ: اعْلَمْ أَنَّ هَذَا جِرْوُ ذِئْبٍ قَدْ أَخَذْنَاهُ فَأَدْخَلْنَاهُ بَيْتِنَا فَلَمَّا كِبَرَ قَتَلَ شَاتَنَا، فَقُلْتُ: أَوَ قُلْتِ فِي ذَلِكَ شِعْرًا؟ قَالَتْ: بَلَى. ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَتْ تَقُولُ: [البحر الوافر] بَقَرْتَ شُوَيْهَةً وَفَجَعْتَ قَوْمًا... وَأَنْتَ لِشَاتِنَا أُمٌّ رَبِيبُ غُذِيتَ بِدَرِّهَا وَرُبِيتَ فِينَا... فَمَنْ أَنْبِاكَ أَنَّ أَبَاكَ ذِيبُ إِذَا كَانَ الطِّبَاعُ طِبَاعَ سَوْءٍ... فَلَيْسَ بِنَافِعٍ أَدَبُ الْأَدِيبِ"
