He said: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Jealous protectiveness (ghayrah) is part of faith, and permissiveness (midhāʾ) is part of hypocrisy, and the one who is permissive (al-midhāʾ) is the cuckold (dayyūth)." "Thus it came as a mursal report." We have narrated it from Abū Marḥūm, from Zayd b. Aslam, from ʿAṭāʾ b. Yasār, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "Jealous protectiveness is part of faith." Al-Ḥalīmī, may God have mercy on him, said: "Al-midhāʾ is that a man gathers men and women, then leaves them to mingle with one another. It is taken from al-madhy, and it was said: it is sending men out with women, from their saying: I let a mare loose (madhaytu farasan) when you send it out to graze. He said: And God, Mighty and Majestic, said: {وَقُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا} [al-Nūr: 31] the verse, and He said: {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا} [al-Taḥrīm: 6]. So included in all of that is that a man protects his wife and his daughter from mixing with men, conversing with them, and being alone with them."
