أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَهْلٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ غَالِبِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ تَمْتَامٌ، حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَبُو عَمْرٍو، حَدَّثَنَا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ الْقُرَشِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ،
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، خَرَجَ عَلَى رَهْطٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ وَهُمْ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ فَقَالَ: " وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا أَعْلَمُ لَضَحِكْتُمْ قَلِيلًا وَلَبَكَيْتُمْ كَثِيرًا، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفْنَا أَوْحَى اللهُ إِلَيْهِ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ لِمَ تُقَنِّطُ عِبَادِي؟ فَرَجَعَ إِلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ: أَبْشِرُوا، وَقَارِبُوا، وَسَدِّدُوا " قَالَ الْبَيْهَقِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ: " فَفِي هَذَا دَلَالَةٌ عَلَى أَنَّهُ لَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ خَوْفُهُ بِحَيْثُ يُؤَيِّسُهُ وَيُقَنِّطُهُ مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللهِ، كَمَا لَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ رَجَاؤُهُ بِحَيْثُ يَأْمَنُ مَكْرَ اللهِ، أَوْ يُجَرِّئُهُ عَلَى مَعْصِيَةِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ "

When we departed, Allah revealed to him: "O Muḥammad, why do you make My servants despair?" So he returned to them and said: "Receive glad tidings, strive for moderation, and be upright." Al-Bayhaqī, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "In this is an indication that a person's fear should not reach the point that it makes him despair and lose hope of the mercy of Allah, just as his hope should not reach the point that he feels safe from the plan of Allah, or that it emboldens him to disobey Allah, Mighty and Majestic."
