قَالَ: وَأَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي الدُّنْيَا، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، نَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، نَا صَالِحُ بْنُ مُوسَى الطَّلْحِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ،
قَالَ: اجْتَهَدَ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ اجْتِهَادًا شَدِيدًا، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: لَوْ أَمْسَكْتَ وَرَفِقْتَ بِنَفْسِكَ بَعْضَ الرِّفْقِ، قَالَ: " إِنَّ الْخَيْلَ إِذَا أُرْسِلَتْ فَقَارَبَتْ رَأْسَ مُجْرَاهَا أَخْرَجَتْ جَمِيعَ مَا عِنْدَهَا، وَالَّذِي بَقِيَ مِنْ أَجَلِي أَقُلُّ مِنْ ذَلِكَ ". قَالَ: فَلَمْ يَزَلْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ حَتَّى مَاتَ
