"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Call (your children) by the names of the prophets. And the most beloved names to Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, are 'Abdullah and 'Abdur-Rahman. Keep horses; wipe their forelocks and posteriors, and prepare them for Jihad, but do not prepare them to seek vengeance for people killed during the Jahiliyyah. You should seek out Kumait, horses with a white mark on the face and white feet, or red with a white mark on the face and white feet, or black with a white mark on the face and white feet.'"

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationI heard this hadith from Faḍl al-Aʿraj, and I had missed it from Aḥmad, and I rejected it in myself. It kept occurring to my heart that he was Abū Wahb al-Kalāʿī, the companion of Makḥūl. Our companions found it strange, and I could not say anything because Aḥmad had narrated it. Then I came to Ḥimṣ, and Ibn al-Muṣaffā narrated to us from Abū al-Mughīrah, who said: Muḥammad b. Muhājir narrated to me, he said: ʿAqīl b. Saʿīd narrated to me, from Abū Wahb al-Kalāʿī, who said: The Prophet ﷺ said... And Abū Muḥammad informed us, he said: My father also narrated it to us another time, he said: Hishām b. ʿAmmār narrated to us from Yaḥyā b. Ḥamzah, from Abū Wahb, from Sulaymān b. Mūsā, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said... So I knew that it was false and that my rejection had been correct. Abū Wahb al-Kalāʿī is the companion of Makḥūl who narrates from Makḥūl, and his name is ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUbayd. He is below the Successors (tābiʿūn), narrating from the Successors, and he is of the rank of al-Awzāʿī and the like. So I remained amazed at Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, how this was hidden from him, for I rejected it when I heard of it, before I had examined it. And ʿAqīl b. Saʿīd, or ʿAqīl b. Shabīb, is unknown (majhūl); I do not know him.
