أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ قَالَ

كُنْتُ رَدِيفَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَمَا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ إِلَّا آخِرَةُ الرَّحْلِ فَقَالَ «يَا مُعَاذُ» فَقُلْتُ لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَسَعْدَيْكَ قَالَ «أَتَدْرِي مَا حَقُّ اللهِ عَلَى الْعِبَادِ؟» قُلْتُ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ «حَقُّ اللهِ عَلَى الْعِبَادِ أَنْ يَعْبُدُوهُ وَلَا يُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا» ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا مُعَاذُ بْنَ جَبَلٍ» قُلْتُ لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَسَعْدَيْكَ قَالَ «هَلْ تَدْرِي مَا حَقُّ الْعِبَادِ عَلَى اللهِ إِذَا فَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ؟» قُلْتُ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ «حَقَّهُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ لَا يُعَذِّبَهُمْ»

✧ I was riding behind the Prophet ﷺ with nothing between me and him but the rear of the saddle. He said: "O Mu'adh." I said: "At your service, O Messenger of Allah, and at your call." He said: "Do you know what Allah's right over His servants is?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "Allah's right over His servants is that they worship Him and not associate anything with Him." Then he said: "O Mu'adh b. Jabal." I said: "At your service, O Messenger of Allah, and at your call." He said: "Do you know what the servants' right over Allah is if they do that?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "Their right over Him is that He will not punish them."
