أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ عَنْ جَرِيرٍ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ سَهْمٍ رَجُلٍ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ قَالَ نَزَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي هَاشِمِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ وَهُوَ طَعِينٌ فَأَتَاهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ يَعُودُهُ فَبَكَى أَبُو هَاشِمٍ قَالَ

لَهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ مَا يُبْكِيكَ يَا خَالِي أَوَجَعٌ يُشْئِزُكَ أَمْ عَلَى الدُّنْيَا فَقَدْ ذَهَبَ صَفْوَتُهَا؟ قَالَ كُلُّ لَا وَلَكِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ عَهْدًا وَدِدْتُ أَنِّي كُنْتُ تَبِعْتُهُ قَالَ «إِنَّكَ لَعَلَّكَ أَنْ تُدْرِكَ أَمْوَالًا تُقْسَمُ بَيْنَ أَقْوَامٍ فَإِنَّمَا يَكْفِيكَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ خَادِمٌ وَمَرْكَبٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» فَأَدْرَكْتُ فَجَمَعْتُ

✧ Mu'awiya said to him: What makes you weep, O my maternal uncle? Is it a pain that afflicts you or about this world, whose pure part has gone? He said: Neither, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me a covenant that I wish I had followed. He said, "Perhaps you will live to see wealth divided among people. A servant and a mount in the path of Allah are enough for you from that." I lived to see it and amassed.
