أَخْبَرَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ وَالْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ قَالَ دَخَلَ مُعَاوِيَةُ عَلَى أَبِي هَاشِمِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ وَهُوَ مَرِيضٌ يَعُودُهُ فَقَالَ

يَا خَالِي مَا يُبْكِيكَ أَوَجَعٌ يُشْئِزُكَ أَمْ حِرْصٌ عَلَى الدُّنْيَا؟ قَالَ كُلٌّ لَا وَلَكِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ عَهْدًا لَمْ آخُذْ بِهِ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا يَكْفِيكَ مِنْ جَمْعِ الْمَالِ خَادِمٌ وَمَرْكَبٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» فَأَجِدُنِي الْيَوْمَ قَدْ جَمَعْتُ

Translation

✧ O my maternal uncle, what makes you weep? Is it a pain that afflicts you or desire for this world? He said: Neither, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me a covenant that I did not keep. He said, "A servant and a mount in the path of Allah are enough for you from amassing wealth." I find myself today having amassed.
