✧ The Interpretation of the Saying of Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, "Your wives are a tilth for you, so go to your tilth when or how you will." [al-Baqarah: 223]

أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ نُفَيْلٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عِيسَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُفَضَّلُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي النَّضْرِ أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِنَافِعٍ مَوْلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ قَدْ أَكْثَرَ عَلَيْكَ الْقَوْلَ أَنَّكَ تَقُولُ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّهُ §أَفْتَى بِأَنْ يُؤْتَى النِّسَاءُ فِي أَدْبَارِهِنَّ قَالَ نَافِعٌ لَقَدْ كَذَبُوا عَلَيَّ وَلَكِنِّي سَأُخْبِرُكَ كَيْفَ كَانَ الْأَمْرُ إِنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ عَرَضَ الْمُصْحَفَ يَوْمًا وَأَنَا عِنْدَهُ حَتَّى بَلَغَ {نِسَاؤُكُمْ حَرْثٌ لَكُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَكُمْ أَنَّى شِئْتُمْ} [البقرة 223] قَالَ

يَا نَافِعُ هَلْ تَعْلَمُ مَا أَمْرُ هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ إِنَّا كُنَّا مَعْشَرَ قُرَيْشٍ نُجَبِّي النِّسَاءَ فَلَمَّا دَخَلْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ وَنَكَحْنَا نِسَاءَ الْأَنْصَارِ أَرَدْنَا مِنْهُنَّ مِثْلَ مَا كُنَّا نُرِيدُ مِنْ نِسَائِنَا فَإِذَا هُنَّ قَدْ كَرِهْنَ ذَلِكَ وَأَعْظَمْنَهُ وَكَانَتْ نِسَاءُ الْأَنْصَارِ إِنَّمَا يُؤْتَيْنَ عَلَى جُنُوبِهِنَّ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَعَالَى {نِسَاؤُكُمْ حَرْثٌ لَكُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَكُمْ أَنَّى شِئْتُمْ} [البقرة 223]

✧ O Nāfiʿ, do you know what is the matter with this verse? We, the Quraysh, used to approach women from behind. When we entered Madinah and married women of the Ansar, we wanted from them the same as we wanted from our women, but they disliked that and considered it grave. The women of the Ansar used to be approached on their sides. Then God, Exalted be He, revealed: {Your wives are a tilth for you, so go to your tilth when or how you will} [al-Baqarah: 223].
