أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُقَدَّمٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا التَّيْمِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي مِجْلَزٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَبَّادٍ قَالَ بَيْنَا أَنَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فِي الصَّفِّ الْمُقَدَّمِ فَجَبَذَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ خَلْفِي جَبْذَةً فَنَحَّانِي وَقَامَ مَقَامِي فَوَاللهِ مَا عَقَلْتُ صَلَاتِي فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ إِذَا هُوَ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ فَقَالَ
يَا فَتَى لَا يَسُوءُكَ اللهُ إِنَّ هَذَا عَهْدٌ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِلَيْنَا أَنْ نَلِيَهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ فَقَالَ «هَلَكَ أَهْلُ الْعَقْدِ وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ ثَلَاثًا» ثُمَّ قَالَ «وَاللهِ مَا عَلَيْهِمْ آسَى وَلَكِنْ آسَى عَلَى مَنْ أَضَلُّوا» قُلْتُ يَا أَبَا يَعْقُوبٍ مَا يَعْنِي بِهِ أَهْلَ الْعَقْدِ؟ قَالَ «الْأُمَرَاءُ»
Translation

✧ “O young man, may Allah not grieve you. This is a covenant from the Prophet ﷺ to us, that we should stand closest to him.” Then he faced the qiblah and said: “The people of the ʿaqd have perished, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah,” three times. Then he said: “By Allah, I do not grieve for them, but I grieve for those whom they led astray.” I said: “O Abū Yaʿqūb, what does he mean by ‘the people of the ʿaqd’?” He said: “The rulers.”
