✧ Sahl b. Sa‘d said: There was a fight among Banu ‘Amr b. ‘Awf. The Prophet ﷺ heard of it, so he prayed Zuhr, then went to them to reconcile them. He said to Bilal: “O Bilal, if the time for ‘Asr comes and I have not returned, tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.” When the time came, Bilal called the adhan, then the iqamah, and said to Abu Bakr: “Step forward.” Abu Bakr stepped forward and began the prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and made his way through the people until he stood behind Abu Bakr. The people clapped, but Abu Bakr would not turn around during his prayer. When Abu Bakr saw the clapping not ceasing, he turned, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him with his hand. Abu Bakr praised Allah for what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had told him: “Continue,” then Abu Bakr walked backward on his heels and moved back. When the Prophet ﷺ saw that, he stepped forward and led the people in prayer. When he finished his prayer, he said: “O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from continuing when I gestured to you?” He replied: “It was not for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in prayer.” He said to the people: “If something happens, let the men say Subhan Allah and the women clap.”
