أَخْبَرَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَلْقَمَةُ بْنُ مَرْثَدٍ أَنَّ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنَ بُرَيْدَةَ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا بَعَثَ أَمِيرًا عَلَى جَيْشٍ أَوْ سَرِيَّةٍ دَعَاهُ فَأَوْصَاهُ فِي خَاصَّةِ نَفْسِهِ وَمَنْ مَعَهُ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ خَيْرًا وَقَالَ «اغْزُوا بِاسْمِ اللهِ وَلَا تَغْدِرُوا وَلَا تُمَثِّلُوا وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا وَلِيدًا وَإِذَا لَقِيتَ عَدُوَّكَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَادْعُهُمْ إِلَى إِحْدَى ثَلَاثٍ فَإِنْ أَجَابُوكَ إِلَيْهَا فَاقْبَلْ مِنْهُمْ وَكُفَّ عَنْهُمُ ادْعُهُمْ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ فَإِنْ فَعَلُوا فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنَّ لَهُمْ مَا لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِمْ مَا عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ ثُمَّ ادْعُهُمْ إِلَى التَّحَوُّلِ مِنْ دَارِهِمْ إِلَى دَارِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ فَإِنْ فَعَلُوا فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنَّ لَهُمْ مَا لِلْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِمْ مَا عَلَى الْمُهَاجِرِينَ فَإِنْ هُمْ أَسْلَمُوا وَاخْتَارُوا دَارَهُمْ فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ كَأَعْرَابِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَجْرِي عَلَيْهِمْ حُكْمُ اللهِ الَّذِي يَجْرِي عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ» أَوْ قَالَ «عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَأَنَّ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ فِي الْغَنِيمَةِ وَالْفَيْءِ شَيْءٌ فَإِنْ هُمْ أَبَوْا فَادْعُهُمْ إِلَى إِعْطَاءِ الْجِزْيَةِ فَإِنْ هُمْ فَعَلُوا فَاقْبَلْ مِنْهُمْ وَكَفَّ عَنْهُمْ فَإِنْ أَبَوْا فَاسْتَعِنْ بِاللهِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَقَاتِلْهُمْ وَإِذَا حَاصَرْتُمْ حِصْنًا فَأَرَادُوا عَلَى أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لَهُمْ ذِمَّةَ اللهِ وَذِمَّةَ رَسُولِهِ فَلَا تَجْعَلْ لَهُمْ ذِمَّةَ اللهِ تَعَالَى وَلَا ذِمَّةَ رَسُولِهِ وَاجْعَلْ لَهُمْ ذِمَّتَكَ وَذِمَمَ آبَائِكَ وَذِمَمَ أَصْحَابِكَ فَإِنَّكُمْ إِنْ تَخْفِرُوا ذِمَّتَكُمْ وَذِمَمَ أَصْحَابِكُمْ أَهْوَنُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ أَنْ تَخْفِرُوا ذِمَّةَ اللهِ تَعَالَى وَذِمَّةَ رَسُولِهِ وَإِذَا حَاصَرْتُمْ حِصْنًا فَأَرَادُوا عَلَى أَنْ تُنْزِلُوهُمْ عَلَى حُكْمِ اللهِ فَلَا تُنْزِلُوهُمْ عَلَى حُكْمِ اللهِ فَإِنَّكَ لَا تَدْرِي أَتُصِيبُ فِيهِمْ حُكْمَ اللهِ أَمْ لَا وَلَكِنْ أَنْزِلُوهُمْ عَلَى حُكْمِكَ»

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a commander over an army or a detachment, he would call him and advise him, for himself and those Muslims with him, to good. He said: "Raid in the name of Allah; do not act treacherously, do not mutilate, and do not kill a child. When you meet your enemy among the polytheists, call them to one of three things; if they respond to any, accept it from them and withhold from them: call them to Islam. If they do, tell them they have what the Muslims have and owe what the Muslims owe. Then call them to move from their abode to the abode of the emigrants. If they do, tell them they have what the emigrants have and owe what the emigrants owe. If they embrace Islam and choose their own abode, tell them they are like the believing bedouins, subject to the judgment of Allah that applies to the believers"—or he said "to the Muslims—and that they have no share in spoils or tribute. If they refuse, then call them to pay the jizyah. If they do, accept it from them and withhold from them. If they refuse, then seek help from Allah against them and fight them. If you besiege a fortress and they seek that you grant them the protection of Allah and His Messenger, do not grant them the protection of Allah, exalted is He, nor of His Messenger, but grant them your protection and the protection of your fathers and your companions. For if you violate your own protection and that of your companions, it is easier for you than violating the protection of Allah, exalted is He, and His Messenger. If you besiege a fortress and they seek to descend upon the judgment of Allah, do not bring them down upon the judgment of Allah, for you do not know whether you will hit upon the judgment of Allah concerning them or not; rather bring them down upon your own judgment."
