✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ learned that there was some discord among Banu ‘Amr b. ‘Awf, so he went out to reconcile them, accompanied by a group of people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delayed, and the time for prayer came. Bilal went to Abu Bakr and said: “O Abu Bakr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been delayed, and the time for prayer has come. Will you lead the people in prayer?” He replied: “Yes, if you wish.” Bilal called the iqamah, Abu Bakr stepped forward and pronounced the takbir for the people. Then the Prophet ﷺ came walking through the rows until he stood in the row, and the people began to clap. Abu Bakr would not turn around during his prayer, but when the clapping increased, he turned and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him, telling him to continue praying. Abu Bakr raised his hands, praised Allah, and moved backward until he stood in the row. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stepped forward and led the people in prayer. When he finished, he faced the people and said: “O people, what is wrong with you that when something happened during the prayer you began to clap? Clapping is only for women. Whoever something happens to during his prayer should say: Subhan Allah, for no one hears him when he says Subhan Allah without turning around. O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from continuing to lead the people when I gestured to you?” Abu Bakr replied: “It was not appropriate for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in prayer.”
