✧ While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he was distributing a portion, Dhu al-Khuwaysirah, a man from Banu Tamim, came to him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, be just.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Who will be just if I am not just? You would be ruined and lost if I were not just.” Umar said, “Permit me to strike his neck.” He said: “Leave him, for he has companions whose prayer one of you would belittle compared to their prayer, and his fasting compared to their fasting. They recite the Qur’an, but it does not go beyond their collarbones. They pass out of Islam as an arrow passes out of the game. One looks at its arrowhead and finds nothing on it; then he looks at its binding and finds nothing on it; then he looks at its shaft and finds nothing on it—that is the wooden part—; then he looks at its fletching and finds nothing on it; it has gone ahead of the blood and the dung. Their sign is a black man, one of whose upper arms is like a woman’s breast or like a piece of flesh that quivers. They will emerge against the best faction of people.” Abu Sa‘id said: “I bear witness that I heard this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I bear witness that Ali b. Abi Talib fought them while I was with him. He ordered [a search for] that man, and he was sought and found, and he was brought until I saw him matching the description of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he had described.”
