أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا الْعَوَّامُ عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ عَنْ حَنْظَلَةَ بْنِ خُوَيْلِدٍ قَالَ

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ مُعَاوِيَةَ فَأَتَاهُ رَجُلَانِ يَخْتَصِمَانِ فِي رَأْسِ عَمَّارٍ يَقُولُ «كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا أَنَا قَتَلْتُهُ» فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو لِيَطِبْ بِهِ أَحَدُكُمَا نَفْسًا لِصَاحِبِهِ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «تَقْتُلُهُ الْفِئَةُ الْبَاغِيَةُ» قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ خَالَفَهُ شُعْبَةُ فَقَالَ عَنِ الْعَوَّامِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ حَنْظَلَةَ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ

✧ I was with Mu'awiyah when two men came to him arguing about the killing of Ammar. One of them said, "I killed him." Abdullah ibn 'Amr said, "Let one of you admit to killing him in self-defense for his companion, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The aggressor group will kill him.'" Abu 'Abdur-Rahman (i.e., Mu'awiyah) disagreed with him, and Shu'bah narrated from Al-Awam, from a man, from Hanzalah bin Suwaid.
