al-Sunan al-Kubra (al-Nasa'i) 8437

✧ position of Ali bin Abi Talib, his closeness to the Prophet ﷺ, his companionship with him, and the love of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for him.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ عَرَارٍ قَالَ

سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ وَهُوَ فِي مَسْجِدِ الرَّسُولِ ﷺ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ وَعُثْمَانَ فَقَالَ «أَمَّا عَلِيٌّ فَلَا تَسَلْنِي عَنْهُ وَانْظُرْ إِلَى مَنْزِلِهِ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَيْسَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ بَيْتٌ غَيْرَ بَيْتِهِ وَأَمَّا عُثْمَانُ فَإِنَّهُ أَذْنَبَ ذَنْبًا عَظِيمًا تَوَلَّى يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ فَعَفَا اللهُ عَنْهُ وَغَفَرَ لَهُ وَأَذْنَبَ فِيكُمْ ذَنْبًا دُونَ فَقَتَلْتُمُوهُ»

✧ I asked Ibn Umar, while he was in the mosque of the Messenger ﷺ, about Ali and Uthman. He said: “As for Ali, do not ask me about him; look at his dwelling among those of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—there is no house in the mosque other than his. As for Uthman, he committed a grave sin: he turned back on the day the two armies met, and Allah pardoned him and forgave him, and he committed a lesser sin among you, and you killed him.”
