✧ position of Ali bin Abi Talib, his closeness to the Prophet ﷺ, his companionship with him, and the love of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for him.

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ قَالَ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ ابْنَ عُمَرَ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ

«كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ فَتَابَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ أَصَابَ ذَنْبًا فَقَتَلُوهُ» وَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ فَقَالَ «لَا تَسَلْ عَنْهُ إِلَّا قُرْبَ مَنْزِلَتِهِ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ»

✧ “He was among those who turned back on the day the two armies met, and Allah relented toward him. Then he committed a sin, and they killed him.” And he asked him about Ali, and he said: “Do not ask about him except for the nearness of his station to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
