أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ
بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَيْنَا عَلِيًّا فَلَمَّا رَجَعْنَا سَأَلْنَا «كَيْفَ رَأَيْتُمْ صُحْبَةَ صَاحِبِكُمْ؟» فَإِمَّا شَكَوْتُهُ أَنَا وَإِمَّا شَكَاهُ غَيْرِي فَرَفَعْتُ رَأْسِي وَكُنْتُ رَجُلًا مِكْبَابًا فَإِذَا بِوَجْهِ رَسُولِ اللهِ قَدِ احْمَرَّ فَقَالَ «مَنْ كُنْتُ وَلِيَّهُ فَعَلِيٌّ وَلِيُّهُ»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us on an expedition and appointed Ali as our commander. When we returned, he asked us, "How did you find the company of your companion?" Either I complained about him or someone else did. I raised my head, for I was a man who often lowered it, and saw that the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had reddened. He said, "Whoever I am his guardian, Ali is his guardian."
