أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ سَعْدٍ قَالَ

نُزِّلَ فِيَّ وَفِي سِتَّةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْهُمُ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوْ طَرَدْتَ هَؤُلَاءِ السِّفْلَةُ عَنْكَ هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَكَ فَوَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {وَلَا تَطْرُدِ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِيِّ} [الأنعام 52] يُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَهُ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {أَلَيْسَ اللهُ بِأَعْلَمَ بِالشَّاكِرِينَ} [الأنعام 53]

✧ It was revealed concerning me and six of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, including Ibn Mas'ud. They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, if only you would drive away these lowly people from you, for they are the ones who are closest to you.' Something occurred in the heart of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so this verse was revealed: {And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His countenance} [al-An'am 52] up to His saying: {Is not Allah most knowing of the grateful?} [al-An'am 53]
