✧ From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding the expedition of Tabūk. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in the morning, and when he returned from a journey, he would begin with the mosque and pray two rak'ahs in it, then sit for the people. When he did that, those who had stayed behind came to make excuses to him and swear to him; they were eighty-some men. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted their outward excuses, pledged allegiance to them, sought forgiveness for them, and entrusted their inner secrets to Allah. Then I came. When I greeted him, he smiled the smile of one who is angry, then said: «Come forward.» I came walking until I sat before him. He said to me: «What kept you back? Did you not buy your mount?» I said: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, if I had sat with anyone other than you among the people of this world, I would have thought I could escape his displeasure with argument. I have been given skill in disputation. But by Allah, I know that if I tell you today a lie that pleases you about me, Allah would soon make you angry with me. And if I tell you the truth and you find fault with me in it, I hope for a good outcome from Allah. By Allah, I was never stronger or more prosperous than when I stayed behind from you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: «As for this one, he has spoken the truth. Arise until judgment is passed regarding you.» I went away, discomfited.
