أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ نَبِيطَ عَنْ نُعَيْمٍ عَنْ نَبِيطَ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ قَالَ §وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الصُّفَّةِ قَالَ قَالَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ مِنَّا أَمِيرٌ وَمِنْكُمْ أَمِيرٌ قَالَ

عُمَرُ «سِيفَانِ فِي غِمْدٍ وَاحِدٍ إِذًا لَا يَصْلُحَانِ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ بِيَدِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ» فَقَالَ مَنْ لَهُ هَذِهِ الثَّلَاثُ {إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ} [التوبة 40] مَنْ صَاحِبُهُ؟ {إِذْ هُمَا فِي الْغَارِ} [التوبة 40] مَنْ هُمَا؟ {إِنَّ اللهَ مَعَنَا} [التوبة 40] مَعَ مَنْ؟ ثُمَّ بَايَعَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «بَايِعُوا فَبَايَعَ النَّاسُ أَحْسَنَ بَيْعَةٍ وَأَجْمَلَهَا»

✧ 'Umar said: "Two swords in one sheath—then they will not both be fitting." Then he took the hand of Abu Bakr and said: "Who has these three? {When he said to his companion} [al-Tawbah 40]—who is his companion? {When they were both in the cave} [al-Tawbah 40]—who are the two? {Indeed Allah is with us} [al-Tawbah 40]—with whom?" Then he pledged allegiance to him, then said: "Give allegiance." So the people gave allegiance in the best and most beautiful manner.
