al-Sunan al-Kubra (al-Nasa'i) 6958

✧ Interpretation of the Saying of Allah Almighty, "But whoever is forgiven something by his brother as a favor [i.e., out of kindness and generosity] then [let him] follow [his brother] with acceptable behavior and [let him] fulfill [his obligations to] him in a good manner." [al-Baqarah: 178]

أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَفْصٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا وَرْقَاءُ عَنْ عَمْرٍو عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ

{كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْقِصَاصُ فِي الْقَتْلَى الْحَرُّ بِالْحُرِّ} [البقرة 178] قَالَ كَانَ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقِصَاصُ وَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِمُ الدِّيَةُ «فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ الدِّيَةَ فَجَعَلَهَا عَلَى هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ تَخْفِيفًا عَلَى مَا كَانَ عَلَى بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ»

✧ "Retribution is prescribed for you in the matter of the murdered: the free for the free" [al-Baqarah: 178]. He said: "The Children of Israel had retribution and no blood money. Then Allah revealed blood money and made it for this nation as an alleviation from what was upon the Children of Israel."
