أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْمُفَضَّلِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ بُشَيْرِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ

عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ انْطَلَقَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَهْلٍ وَمُحَيِّصَةُ بْنُ مَسْعُودِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ إِلَى خَيْبَرَ وَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ صُلْحٌ فَتَفَرَّقَا فِي حَوَائِجِهِمَا فَأَتَى مُحَيِّصَةُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَهْلٍ وَهُوَ يَتَشَحَّطُ فِي دَمِهِ فَدَفَنَهُ ثُمَّ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ فَانْطَلَقَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَهْلٍ ومُحَيِّصَةُ وَحُوَيِّصَةُ ابْنَا مَسْعُودٍ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَهَبَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ يَتَكَلَّمُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «كَبِّرِ الْكُبْرَ» وَهُوَ أَحْدَثُ الْقَوْمِ فَسَكَتَ فَتَكَلَّمَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «تَحْلِفُونَ بِخَمْسِينَ مِنْكُمْ وَتَسْتَحِقُّونَ قَاتِلَكُمْ أَوْ صَاحِبَكُمْ؟» فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ نَحْلِفُ وَلَمْ نَشْهَدْ وَلَمْ نَرَ؟ قَالَ «تُبَرِّئُكُمْ يَهُودُ بِخَمْسِينَ» فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ نَأْخُذُ أَيْمَانَ قَوْمٍ كُفَّارٍ؟ فَعَقَلَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ

✧ From Sahl b. Abi Hathmah: ‘Abd Allah b. Sahl and Muhayyisah b. Mas‘ud b. Zayd went to Khaybar, which at that time was under a peace treaty, and they separated for their needs. Muhayyisah came upon ‘Abd Allah b. Sahl while he was wallowing in his blood, so he buried him. Then he came to Madinah. ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Sahl, Muhayyisah, and Huwayyisah, the two sons of Mas‘ud, went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ‘Abd al-Rahman went to speak, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “Let the eldest speak first,” and he was the youngest of the people, so he fell silent. Then the two spoke. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Will you swear fifty oaths from among you and thus be entitled to your killer or your companion?” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, how can we swear when we did not witness and did not see?” He said: “The Jews will absolve you with fifty oaths.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, how can we accept the oaths of a disbelieving people?” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid the blood money himself.
